HRAI (Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada)
Canadian HVACR trade association (founded 1968): design designations, refrigerant courses and a contractor locator
Market position
The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) is a non-profit national trade association founded in 1968 that says it represents more than 1,150 member companies in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. Members join through its Contractors, Wholesalers or Manufacturers Divisions or as associates. For contractors, HRAI runs training, RASDT/RHDT/RVDT design designations, a Certified Installers & Designers listing and ODP/ODS refrigerant courses.
Canada-specific note
HRAI's online ODP/ODS program (Canada's Ozone Layer Protection Awareness Program) leads to an ODP wallet card in Ontario or an ODS wallet card in other provinces, which HRAI says is needed to buy or handle refrigerants. It also offers a Low GWP/A2L refrigerants course and heat pump training.
Pros
- + National HVACR association with contractor, wholesaler and manufacturer divisions
- + RASDT/RHDT/RVDT designations with a public certification lookup
- + ODP/ODS refrigerant card course plus Low GWP/A2L training
- + Contractor Locator for homeowners
Cons
- โ HVACR only
- โ A trade association, not a licensing body: provincial trade certification is separate
- โ Membership fees not published
Typical Canada pricing
Membership fees not published (HRAI asks prospects to contact it); ODP/ODS online course $275 + HST
Why this matters for Canada trades
Provinces and territories are responsible for apprenticeship training and trade certification; a Red Seal endorsement on a provincial or territorial certificate shows the holder passed the Red Seal exam but does not by itself certify anyone to carry on a trade. In Ontario, working in one of the 23 compulsory trades needs a valid Certificate of Qualification from Skilled Trades Ontario (or a provisional certificate or registered training agreement), only ESA-licensed contractors may do electrical work for hire, TSSA registers fuels contractors and certifies gas technicians, and WSIB says people who own or run a construction business must, with some exceptions, have WSIB coverage and register. The Canadian payroll tools listed here say they handle CRA remittances and Records of Employment; Quebec payroll adds Revenu Quรฉbec remittances, QPP, QPIP and RL-1 reporting, which not every tool covers.
Canadian trades vendor selection is shaped by provincial and territorial trade certification (with the interprovincial Red Seal endorsement), provincial safety regulators and workplace insurance boards such as Ontarioโs ESA, TSSA and WSIB, CRA payroll remittances, GST, HST and PST (some provinces charge GST and PST separately), and separate Quebec payroll rules (Revenu Quรฉbec, QPP, QPIP). Several software vendors listed here publish prices in US dollars.
