Safe Electric is the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) scheme for electrical contractors in Ireland; the CRU says registration 'is the law'. Since 2023 the CRU-appointed Safety Supervisory Body has been Safe Energy Ireland, owned by SGS Ireland Limited, which runs the scheme under the Safe Electric brand for 2023-2028; RECI held the role from 2016 to 2022. The CRU handles enforcement, including prosecutions against unregistered electrical contractors.

A Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) needs a named Qualified Certifier with a National Craft Certificate (Electrical) or an equivalent Level 6 award and a Verification and Certification course renewed every five years. RECs need public/products liability cover of at least €6.5 million and, if they employ staff, employers' liability of at least €13 million. They must issue a Completion Certificate for all electrical works except minor works.

Why this matters for Ireland trades
Since 1 September 2026 it is illegal for anyone who is not a Registered Gas Installer to carry out domestic or non-domestic gas works (S.I. No. 106/2026), and the CRU says Safe Electric registration for electrical contractors is the law; Safe Energy Ireland runs both schemes for the CRU. Principal contractors deduct RCT at 0%, 20% or 35% from subcontractors’ payments and file through ROS.
