About QuickBooks Desktop / Enterprise
QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is the heavy-duty, Windows-installed end of the QuickBooks line, and its Contractor edition has the deepest job costing of any QuickBooks product — automatic cost-to-job tracking, change-order management, billing-rate levels (different labor rates for foreman vs. crew that auto-fill on invoices), and estimate-vs-actual reporting. It's where established US contractors graduate once QuickBooks Online's job costing stops being enough.
The big caveat is product direction: Intuit stopped selling new Pro/Premier/Mac Plus Desktop subscriptions to US customers after September 30, 2024, so Enterprise is effectively the only Desktop version you can still buy new — and it's expensive and rising (price increases landed February 1, 2026). It's Windows-only with no native field app, so contractors bolt on an FSM (Knowify and similar) for scheduling and dispatch. For a multi-crew shop running many simultaneous jobs, subs, and change orders, the job-costing depth justifies it; for a 1–3 person shop, it's overkill — QuickBooks Online, Zoho Books, or Striven fit better.
