It now operates as Huckleberry by Paychex, which its website describes as the digital quoting and binding tool of Paychex Insurance Agency, Inc. Huckleberry is not an insurer: you fill in one online application, it gets quotes from partner insurance carriers, and you can compare them and buy the same day, with the policy written by the carrier you choose.

Huckleberry says most customers can get a quote in about five minutes. Its site covers workers' compensation, general liability, business owner's policies, professional liability, commercial auto, business property and umbrella coverage, and it has industry pages for trades such as electricians, HVAC, plumbing, painters, carpenters, landscaping, cleaning and pressure washing. It says it can quote in all 50 states and Washington, DC, though the coverage types available vary by state.

Because Huckleberry is an agency, the claims handling and financial strength behind your policy come from the carrier it places you with. When an insurer wants to look at an application more closely, Huckleberry says the usual turnaround is the same business day. Being part of Paychex may suit a business that already runs payroll with Paychex.

The trade-off: a fast online quote from a Paychex-owned agency, but the price, claims service and financial strength come from whichever carrier writes the policy, and a trade with unusual risks may still need a specialist broker.
