Insureon Review
Online insurance agency owned by Hub International since 2022: one application, quotes from several carriers, licensed agents on call
Quick verdict
Insureon is best for Small trade businesses that want to compare quotes from several carriers online and buy without meeting an agent in person. Quote speed: Free online application; Insureon says coverage can start in less than 24 hours. Pricing: Quoted per business; Insureon's site shows average costs for contractor policies, but your price depends on trade, location, payroll, vehicles and claims history. An agency, not an insurer: claims go to the issuing carrier, choice is limited to carriers on its panel, and prices are quoted rather than published.
About Insureon
Insureon is an online insurance agency for small businesses, based in Chicago. It does not write policies itself: you fill out one online application, Insureon shows quotes from the insurance companies it works with, and you buy the policy online. Insureon says its carriers include Hiscox, Travelers, Chubb and The Hartford, and that its licensed agents can help with limits, endorsements and harder-to-place risks.
Ownership changed in March 2022, when the broker Hub International bought the Insureon agency and brand and Bold Penguin bought its technology platform. At Hub, Insureon sits inside Specialty Program Group. When the deal was announced, Hub said Insureon served more than 350,000 small-business customers in all 50 states.
For trades, Insureon has contractor pages for general liability, workers' compensation, commercial auto, tools and equipment coverage, umbrella policies and business owner's policies (BOPs), and it publishes average cost figures for these lines. Your actual premium is quoted per business and depends on your trade, location, payroll, vehicles and claims history.
The trade-off: Insureon is an agency, so claims are handled by the carrier that issued your policy, and the quotes you see depend on which carriers on its panel will write your trade in your state. Comparing its quotes with a local independent agent or a direct carrier before you buy is worth the time.
How it works
Fill out Insureon's free online application with basic details about your business, review the quotes that come back from carriers on its panel, then choose a policy and pay online. Insureon says coverage can start in less than 24 hours and you can get a certificate of insurance once you buy. Licensed agents are available if you need help. Insureon is your agency; claims are filed with the carrier that issued the policy.
Pros & cons
What works
-
One application, several carriers
Insureon's online application returns quotes from multiple carriers, which it says include Hiscox, Travelers, Chubb and The Hartford, so you can compare without filling out separate forms.
-
Covers the main contractor lines
Insureon's contractor pages cover general liability, workers' comp, commercial auto, tools and equipment, umbrella and BOPs, so a small trade shop can shop these lines in one place.
-
Licensed agents available
Insureon says its licensed agents can help you choose limits, add endorsements or find coverage for unusual risks, so you are not left alone with the form.
-
Part of a large broker
Hub International has owned the Insureon agency and brand since 2022, so the agency is backed by a large, established insurance broker.
What doesn't
-
Not the insurer
Insureon is an agency. Claims and coverage decisions sit with the carrier that issues your policy, so check which company that is before you buy.
-
Choice limited to its carrier panel
You only see quotes from carriers on Insureon's panel that will write your trade in your state. A local independent agent may have access to other companies.
-
No fixed published prices
Premiums are quoted per business. The average costs on Insureon's site are a starting point, not the price you will pay.
