About ERGO NEXT (formerly NEXT Insurance)
ERGO NEXT Insurance, called NEXT Insurance until January 2026, is a digital insurer for small businesses, including contractors and other trade businesses. NEXT was founded in 2016 and is based in Palo Alto, California. Munich Re announced the deal to buy NEXT in March 2025, and ERGO, Munich Re's primary insurance group, completed the full acquisition on July 1, 2025, at a valuation of $2.6 billion for 100 percent of the shares (ERGO already held about 29 percent). The company took the ERGO NEXT Insurance name on January 15, 2026.
ERGO NEXT describes its product as simple, digital coverage for small business owners. Its current company description lists general liability, business owner's policies (BOP), workers' compensation and professional liability, plus other coverages it does not name there. NEXT's 2025 company description says customers get 24/7 access to purchasing and servicing, including certificates of insurance and adding additional insureds, with no extra fees. ERGO NEXT says it serves more than 750,000 small business customers.
NEXT is not only an online seller. It also works with independent insurance agencies, and in January 2026 it launched a recognition program for its agency partners with profit-sharing and advance commissions. A contractor can buy directly online, or through an independent agent who places business with ERGO NEXT.
The trade-off: premiums come only from a quote, and buying online without an agent puts the coverage choices on you. Compare the ERGO NEXT quote with at least one agent-shopped quote, and check that the limits, additional insured wording and any commercial auto or tools coverage you need are on the policy before you pay.
How it works
Start a quote on the ERGO NEXT website, pick your type of business, answer questions about the business and the coverage you want, and review the price. Policies can be bought online, and ERGO NEXT says purchasing and servicing are available 24/7, including certificates of insurance and adding additional insureds with no extra fees. If you would rather have advice, ERGO NEXT also sells through independent insurance agencies. Confirm during the quote which lines are offered for your trade and state, and read the limits and exclusions before you pay.
Pros & cons
What works
-
Buy and manage coverage online
ERGO NEXT sells policies online and says purchasing and servicing are available 24/7, so you can get a quote and buy outside an agent's office hours.
-
Certificates of insurance with no extra fees
NEXT's company description says online servicing includes certificates of insurance and adding additional insureds, with no extra fees. That matters for trades that must send proof of insurance to general contractors and property managers.
-
Part of the Munich Re group
ERGO, Munich Re's primary insurance group, completed its acquisition of NEXT on July 1, 2025.
-
Core small-business lines from one carrier
ERGO NEXT lists general liability, business owner's policies, workers' compensation and professional liability, so a small shop can keep its main policies with one company.
-
Direct or through an agent
Besides selling online, ERGO NEXT works with independent insurance agencies and launched a recognition program for them in January 2026, so you can still use an agent if you want advice.
What doesn't
-
No published prices
Premiums come only from a quote, so the only way to know whether ERGO NEXT is competitive for your trade is to compare its quote with others.
-
Self-service puts the coverage choices on you
Buying online without an agent means you choose limits, endorsements and exclusions yourself. Read the policy before you buy, or use an agent if you are unsure what your contracts require.
-
Check each line for your trade and state
The lines ERGO NEXT names in its company description are general liability, BOP, workers' compensation and professional liability. If you also need commercial auto, tools and equipment or umbrella coverage, confirm during the quote that it is offered for your trade and state.
-
Large or unusual risks may need a specialist
ERGO NEXT focuses on small businesses. Contractors with large commercial projects, high limit requirements or big fleets may need an agent who can place coverage with other carriers.
-
New name on an existing company
NEXT Insurance became ERGO NEXT Insurance in January 2026, so older reviews, documents and emails may use the old name. It is the same company.
